Chogha Zan­bil is the first Iran­ian site to be includ­ed in the UNESCO World Her­itage List in 1979. The ancient city of Chogha-Zan­­bil was built around 1250 BC by the king Untash-Napirish in an ancient Elamite com­plex (today it is the Iran­ian province of Khuzes­tan). The com­plex was built in hon­or of the great God Isushi­nak.
The ensem­ble con­tains the sur­viv­ing largest zig­gu­rats of Mesopotamia. The first enclo­sure con­tains a piece of land around it, while the sec­ond enclo­sure, trape­zoidal in shape, enclos­es a huge, almost emp­ty area.
