The Palace Bridge across the Bol­shaya Neva con­nects the spit of Vasi­lyevsky Island with Admi­ralteysky Island on the left bank of the Neva. From 1856 until the con­struc­tion of a per­ma­nent cross­ing, a pon­toon bridge was installed at this loca­tion. In 1879, exper­i­men­tal elec­tric lights by Pavel Yablochkov were installed on it. A per­ma­nent five-span draw­bridge 260 m long was built in 1912–1916 accord­ing to the design of engi­neer Andrei Pshen­it­sky. He man­aged to achieve an amaz­ing effect: the bridge seems to spread across the water, pre­serv­ing the panora­ma of the Neva banks. For a long time, the bridge remained devoid of dec­o­ra­tive dec­o­ra­tion; cast iron rail­ings appeared only in 1939 (sculp­tor Igor Krestovsky based on a draw­ing by archi­tect Lev Noskov).
