It has a height of 396 meters and is one of the main attrac­tions of the city. The name of the moun­tain comes from its shape, sim­i­lar to a piece of sug­ar. There is also a ver­sion that the name comes from the phrase “paunh-acuqua”, which in the lan­guage of the local Tupi tribe means “High Hill” or “Guardian of the Bay”. The shape of the moun­tain is formed by weath­er­ing of the igneous rocks that make up the moun­tain. In 1912, a cable car was built to the top of the moun­tain, and from the top there is a view of the city and the ocean.
