The penul­ti­mate of those built in Rus­sia (the last one was built 10 years lat­er in Tobol­sk) and the small­est Krem­lin in the coun­try — its size is only 100x200 m. It was built after the great fire of 1700, which destroyed the wood­en fort that had stood on this site before. The Krem­lin is locat­ed on a nat­ur­al ele­va­tion, on a cliff above the riv­er. Today it is only a for­ti­fied house of the gov­er­nor. Only a few frag­ments remain of the stone wall that once encir­cled the ter­ri­to­ry of the Krem­lin. How­ev­er, a new repli­ca can be seen near­by — attempts to restore the his­tor­i­cal wall (in the unpaint­ed red-brick form, the new pieces of the wall look like a mod­el or some­one’s coun­try estate). In the 19th cen­tu­ry, the admin­is­tra­tive build­ings on the ter­ri­to­ry of the Krem­lin were demol­ished, and in their place, build­ings in the spir­it of clas­si­cism and eclec­ti­cism were built that fit well into the style of the com­plex: the build­ing of the zem­st­vo and dis­trict courts (1802), the build­ing of gov­ern­ment offices (1825), the fire sta­tion (1880s) and the trea­sury build­ing (1914).
