One of the best-pre­served impact craters on the plan­et is locat­ed in the mid­dle of the Sahara Desert. The impact crater was punched into the earth less than 100,000 years ago. The Amguid crater is about 500 meters wide and about 70 meters deep. Satel­lite images clear­ly show the white patch of flat sandy floor of the crater. The crater is almost per­fect­ly round, with steep walls and raised rims that are capped by large sand­stone blocks.
