This is the first per­ma­nent bridge across the Neva in the city. The old­est. the first per­ma­nent draw­bridge on the Neva in St. Peters­burg. The bridge is the riv­er-sea bor­der. Above it the Bol­shaya Neva flows, below the bridge the water­way begins.

In 1855, Emper­or Nicholas I died. And the cross­ing began to be called the Niko­laevsky Bridge. In 1918, the cross­ing received a new name — the Lieu­tenant Schmidt Bridge. Peter Schmidt led the upris­ing on the cruis­er “Ochakov” in Sev­astopol in 1905, and was lat­er exe­cut­ed. The bridge was recon­struct­ed in the 30s. And dur­ing the last recon­struc­tion, in 2007, a tem­po­rary back­up bridge was built next to the old bridge. And in the same year, 2007, the bridge was returned to its his­tor­i­cal name — Blagoveshchen­sky.

Now the bridge is 356 meters long and has eight lanes. No tram tracks. And dur­ing the nav­i­ga­tion sea­son, the aver­age span takes just 55 sec­onds.
