The com­plex of Geor­gian cave monas­ter­ies and the main reli­gious cen­ter of east­ern Geor­gia of the VI cen­tu­ry, locat­ed 60 km south­east of Tbil­isi, on the Geor­­gian-Azer­bai­­jani bor­der, and stretch­ing for 25 km along the slopes of the semi-desert Gare­ji ridge. The com­plex is con­di­tion­al­ly divid­ed into two parts: one part is locat­ed on the ter­ri­to­ry of the Agstafa region (Repub­lic of Azer­bai­jan, 75 km from the cen­ter of the region), and the oth­er is locat­ed on the ter­ri­to­ry of the Sagare­jo region (Repub­lic of Geor­gia).
