The bright red tow­er in ori­en­tal style stands near­ly 50 m tall and hosts Japan­ese art from before export to the West became com­mon. It fea­tures Imari porce­lain from the 17th and 18th cen­tu­ry, as well as 19th cen­tu­ry lac­query, bronze vas­es, ivory objects and oth­er assort­ed orna­men­tal items. The excep­tion­al blue-white vase at the entrance was donat­ed in 1910 to the Bel­gian gov­ern­ment by the Japan­ese emper­or. The tow­er is the cen­ter of a repli­cat­ed Japan­ese gar­den. It was orig­i­nal­ly known as a Ta?, a Japan­ese pago­da, of which con­struc­tion start­ed in 1901 until its inau­gu­ra­tion in 1905.
