On the evening of Decem­ber 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot sev­en times in the back while return­ing from a record­ing stu­dio with Yoko Ono. Ear­li­er that day, Lennon was sign­ing auto­graphs for fans, and among them was his killer, Mark Chap­man.

In the Dako­ta build­ing known to every New York­er today, at the entrance to which the musi­cian was killed, Lennon owned as many as five apart­ments, and now Yoko Ono and the son of the musi­cian Sean Lennon live in them.
