The cur­rent Lahore fortress of burnt bricks and red sand­stone was found­ed by the Mughal emper­or Akbar. Jahangir con­tin­ued his father’s build­ing endeav­ors, com­plet­ing the north­ern court­yard in 1617–1618. Under him in 1614–1625. the north­ern and north­west­ern walls of the fortress were dec­o­rat­ed. Shah Jahan, famous for build­ing the Taj Mahal, was born in the Lahore citadel and there­fore was espe­cial­ly attached to it. Under him, Shih-kila turns from a for­ti­fi­ca­tion into a palace. The “mir­ror palace” and “audi­ence hall” built for Shah Jahan were in no way infe­ri­or to the palace halls in Agra and Del­hi in terms of the splen­dor of the decor.
