A liv­ing root bridge is a sus­pen­sion bridge formed from the liv­ing roots of trees, usu­al­ly rub­ber trees. These liv­ing bridges are par­tic­u­lar­ly com­mon in the Indi­an state of Megha­laya, where the dense jun­gle means that build­ing roads and bridges from com­mon mate­ri­als like con­crete and steel is imprac­ti­cal. More than 100 liv­ing bridges have been formed in the province to enable trib­al com­mu­ni­ties to cross the many rivers in the area.
