Built into three moun­tain ranges in the ear­ly 1900s by the Cana­di­an Pacif­ic Rail­way, the Oth­el­lo Tun­nels were dug to link the Koote­nay region with the British Colom­bia coast by rail. No longer in use, now vis­i­tors can walk around the moun­tain trails in the Coqui­hal­la Canyon Provin­cial Park, and into the five aban­doned rock-carved tun­nels, which now form part of the Trans Cana­da Trail. The tun­nels are cur­rent­ly closed to the pub­lic access due to recent rock falls.
