After com­ple­tion of con­struc­tion in 1903, the embank­ment was named after Emper­or Peter the Great, and in the 1930s it was renamed Petro­vskaya. The Pet­ro­grad side is the old­est part of St. Peters­burg. In 1703, under the cov­er of the con­struc­tion of the Peter and Paul Fortress, a port was built on the site of mod­ern Trin­i­ty Square (on one side it faces the embank­ment). Near­by, the wood­en House of Peter I is being built, which is still pre­served (house No. 6 on Petro­vskaya Embank­ment).
