Known as the Sea of Stars, the waters around Vaad­hoo Island, part of the Mal­dives in the Indi­an Ocean, put on a mag­i­cal night­time dis­play. When dis­turbed, bil­lions of bio­lu­mi­nes­cent microor­gan­isms called dinofla­gel­lates in the water emit a bluish glow, much like aquat­ic fire­flies. When the con­di­tions are right, these float­ing lights can rival the splen­dor of the most stun­ning night sky or spec­tac­u­lar sun­set.
