The memo­r­i­al ensem­ble near the Krem­lin walls was found­ed in Decem­ber 1966 on the occa­sion of the 25th anniver­sary of the defeat of Ger­man troops near Moscow. The open­ing of the memo­r­i­al, designed by archi­tects D. I. Bur­din, V. A. Klimov, Yu. R. Rabaev and sculp­tor N. V. Tom­sky, took place on May 8, 1967. Since Decem­ber 1997, one of the most sig­nif­i­cant mon­u­ments in the coun­try has been post No. 1; until 1993, this role was played by the mau­soleum of V.I. Lenin. The chang­ing of the hon­or guard, con­sist­ing of mil­i­tary per­son­nel of the Pres­i­den­tial Reg­i­ment, occurs every hour and is worth watch­ing. To the right of the star with the Eter­nal Flame is the gran­ite alley of hero cities.
